Apatosaurus means “deceptive lizard.”  This dinosaur has lived up to this name very well.  First, Apatosaurus was discovered, and the “deceptive lizard” name referred to the fact that the bones of Apatosaurus look a lot like the bones of Apatosaurus’ relatives.  Next, another dinosaur was found and named Brontosaurus.  Later, it was discovered that the two animals were the same dinosaur.  Since Apatosaurus had been found first, that is its official name.  Apatosaurus was about 70-90 feet long and weighed about 33-38 tons.  Othneil Charles Marsh discovered it in 1877.
